I once loved NBA basketball. I now love music. And I frequently see parallels b/w basketball and music. Maybe that’s why I often think of my guitars, amps, and other gear as players on my team. With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to borrow some concepts from the NBA’s annual award show, and apply them to gear that I used this year.

Here are my award recipients for 2023. I’d love to know what gear would win these (or similar) awards in your show.

Most Valuable Gear - Ibanez Artcore AXD71 (I've had it since I was 15, and it was never my favorite guitar. But recent mods resurrected it, and to my great surprise, it was the year's obvious standout.)
Coach of the Year - Tascam DP-03SD (the backbone of all of my recording projects)
Rookie of the Year - Realistic PZM Mic (a foolproof room mic)
Most Improved Gear - Ibanez Artcore AXD71 (from zero to hero, as discussed above)
Sportsmanship Award - Meinl Subwoofer Cajon (takes a beating on every project... never gets a session off... never gets dressed up with effects... and never once complained)
Sixth Man of the Year - JHS Packrat (as in prior years, the Rat came off the bench and outperformed many effects that were in the starting lineup... remind me of why I keep it on the bench?)
Clutch Gear of the Year - Casio SA-76 Mini Keyboard (because sometimes I need anything but guitar... and in those times, I can count on this toy to deliver)
Hustle Award - Voice Memos App (my most important songwriting tool, without which my recordings would seem even more amateur)

... with special thanks to whatever picks were close at hand when I had time to record.
